If additional tickets are available, each guest in line is eligible to receive a maximum of 5 additional tickets.
- The Coliseum will begin admitting guests one hour prior to the ceremony start time.
- Degree Candidates should plan to arrive one hour prior to the commencement start time.
- The commencement ceremony typically lasts about two hours.
Additional Ceremony Information
It is important that degree candidates arrive at least one hour prior to their ceremony start time. The doors for ceremony line-up will open an hour and fifteen minutes prior to the ceremony start time. Late-arriving candidates may not be permitted to participate in the ceremony.
Appropriate dress for graduation includes dark shoes for men and women. Men should wear dark pants and a tie. Low-heeled and comfortable shoes are recommended for men and women. It is important that students do not bring handbags or personal items because there is no secure holding area.
Caps and gowns can be purchased at the UWG University Bookstore or through the Herff Jones portal. Cap & gown should be purchased at least four weeks prior to the commencement ceremony. No student will be permitted to participate in the commencement ceremony without a cap & gown.
Students are allowed and encouraged to decorate their graduation cap. Please be mindful that students will not be permitted to wear a cap that is deemed inappropriate by a commencement staff member. Students who are concerned about this policy may send a photo of their cap to the Graduation Team (email@example.com) prior to the ceremony for approval.
Students' tassel colors will vary based on the college of their major. College tassel colors to be worn by undergraduates and graduates are:
College of Arts and Humanities – White
Richards College of Business – Drab
College of Education – Light Blue
Tanner Health System School of Nursing – Apricot
College of Science and Mathematics – Yellow Gold
College of Social Sciences – Citron
Doctoral Candidates - Gold Metallic
Undergraduate students should wear their tassel on the right side of their cap. Graduate students should wear their tassel on the left side of their cap. Don't worry -- you will be reminded of this at the commencement ceremony.
UWG does not host a graduation rehearsal. Students will be guided by experienced commencement professionals on where to line up and when to march on the day of graduation.
Ceremony Day Information
Graduation candidates will enter into the Coliseum through the loading docks on the lower-level east side of the building. Candidates will not be permitted to enter through the front doors and guests will not be permitted to enter through the loading dock. There will be directional signs. If all else fails, follow the other students wearing a cap and gown.
Upon checking in, you will receive your name card from a commencement staff member. This is the card that will be used to call your name during the ceremony. Keep this card with you at all times and do not write on it. If there is any incorrect information on your card, please notify a commencement staff member.
Once you have checked in and you have your card, you will be directed to line up based on the color of your card and your assigned number. Students are grouped based on your college and major.
Line up is conducted in a very narrow hallway. You will not be permitted to sit during line up (fire marshal regulations). Plan to wear comfortable shoes. If you are unable to stand for one-hour and need a special accommodation, please contact the Graduation Team and firstname.lastname@example.org.
Please pay close attention to the direction of the Commencement Staff. You will receive very specific instructions on how to line up, when to march and where to sit.
At each commencement ceremony conducted in the Coliseum, tickets will be provided to each student who applies for graduation and indicates that they will march. The tickets are distributed by the University Bookstore with the cap and gown purchase or by picking them up separately.
Each student will receive 7 tickets to the Commencement Ceremony. Tickets are available for pick-up beginning at the Graduation Fair on November 19th. Tickets may be picked up from the UWG Bookstore anytime after 12:00 pm on November 19th. Students may also choose to have their tickets mailed to them by ordering them online through the UWG Bookstore. There is no charge for Commencement Ceremony tickets; however, there may be a small fee for shipping.
The reception of tickets is not an indication that the student will be graduating. The number of tickets will differ each semester depending on the number of participating graduates.
Due to Fire Marshal regulations, all guests attending a ceremony must have a ticket to enter the Coliseum during graduation. This includes non-marching UWG students, children of any age regardless of if they need their own seat or not, and all other individuals not marching or working as ceremony staff and faculty. The number of tickets allotted are based on how many students are marching each term and the maximum capacity of individuals allowed by the Coliseum to be gathered during special events. For other questions concerning rules and regulations, please consult the Coliseum Policies.
If you have additional tickets that you will not be using for this ceremony, please drop those off at the Bookstore prior to Commencement or a guest may drop them off at Will Call (the Ticket Booth at the front of the Coliseum) on the day of the event.
If additional tickets are available, they can be picked up by graduating students or their guests at Will Call (the Ticket Booth at the front of the Coliseum) 1 ½ hours before the ceremony on a first come first serve basis. If additional tickets are available, each guest in line is eligible to receive a maximum of 5 additional tickets. Doors will open 1 hour prior to the start of the ceremony. Please note that tickets only for that ceremony will be available for pick up at that time. (example- you will not be able to pick up afternoon ceremony tickets before the morning ceremony.
In the event all ceremony tickets have been claimed, there is an overflow room available for guests to view each commencement ceremony on a large screen. This room will be available regardless of whether all tickets have been claimed. Guests DO NOT need a ticket for the overflow room.
The overflow room is located in the Tanner Health System School of Nursing Building, Room 106 (adjacent to the Bookstore).

Arrangements have been made with Village Photographers to photograph each graduate as they cross the stage and receive their diploma. Free proofs of these photos will be sent by mail and e-mail to graduates and their families approximately one week after the ceremony.
Graduates should register before arriving on graduation day in order to receive a free proof. A variety of print packages are available starting at $6.95. If you have any questions regarding photographs, please email email@example.com. Since professional photographs will be available, family members and guests are encouraged to remain in their seats, relax and enjoy the ceremony.
