What is an internship?

"An internship is a form of experiential learning that integrates knowledge and theory learned in the classroom with practical application and skills development in a professional setting. Internships give students the opportunity to gain valuable applied experience and make connections in professional fields they are considering for career paths; and give employers the opportunity to guide and evaluate talent.”  (National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE).

INTERNSHIPS FOR ACADEMIC CREDIT IN THE RICHARDS COLLEGE OF BUSINESS

Internships for students in the Richards College of Business at UWG may be awarded academic credit upon review and approval by the College's Coordinator of Internships and Professional Experiences, the appropriate department chair, and the dean/dean's designee.

Qualifications

  • Good Academic Standing
  • Other prerequisites may be required for specific internships

Academic Requirements

The student will work with Coordinator of Internships and Professional Experiences to determine the academic requirements of the internship. At a minimum these requirements will include a Career Services Preparation Course, journaling, and an evaluation from the supervisor.

Credit Hours & Work Hours

Students are required to work 45 hours per credit hour enrolled, totaling 135 hours for a 3‑credit hour internship.

Most academic departments allow students to earn 3 credit hours for internship coursework. In some cases, students may petition the department chair for permission to complete additional internships. However, typically only 3 credit hours will apply toward degree requirements, even if additional internship credits are approved.

In special circumstances, students may also petition to enroll in 1‑credit‑hour internship courses. These are approved at the discretion of the department chair. A 1-credit hour only requires students to work a total of 3 hours per week (or 45 hours per semester).
