Harry Nelson, D.P.A.

Dr. Nelson is a part-time online instructor of Music Appreciation at the University of West Georgia. He earned both his Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees in Classical Guitar Performance before completing a Doctor of Public Administration. A graduate of the University of West Georgia and the University of Georgia, Dr. Nelson brings a broad academic perspective to the classroom, combining formal musical training with extensive leadership experience in public service. He is the author of a sight-reading method for classical guitar, composes original music, and remains an active performer.

In addition to his work as a classical guitarist, Dr. Nelson minored in Voice and serves as cantor for a Catholic parish. His performance experience includes singing with a chorus at Carnegie Hall, performing the National Anthem for the University of Georgia baseball team on multiple occasions, and returning as an anthem singer in the upcoming season. His diverse background as both an instrumentalist and vocalist enriches his approach to teaching music appreciation, connecting historical, cultural, and performance perspectives for students.

Outside of higher education, Dr. Nelson serves as Deputy Director of the Georgia Council on Developmental Disabilities, where he provides executive leadership in advancing statewide public policy and programs that support Georgians with developmental disabilities. Prior to this role, he built a career in administrative leadership at the University of West Georgia, managing public budgets and university policy before being appointed to senior executive leadership in Georgia state government.
