Marion Franklin Cannon, MSIT

Marion Franklin Cannon is an award-winning computer science educator, career development specialist, and workforce education scholar dedicated to creating inclusive, accessible pathways in STEM. She serves as a Lecturer in Computer Science in the Dr. James 'Earl' Perry College of Mathematics, Computing, and Sciences at the University of West Georgia. Guided by a "Warm Demander" pedagogy, Marion balances high standards of professional accountability with student-centered support, digital literacy, and a growth-mindset framework.

In addition to her faculty position, she is an Education Specialist (EdS) candidate in Workforce Education at the University of Georgia (expected December 2026), where her advanced studies focus on modern workplace curriculum development, educational technology, AI in workforce education, financial literacy, and facilitating student transitions from higher education into adult life. Her teaching excellence and innovative contributions to computer science education have been recognized through her selection as a Governor’s Teaching Fellow, a UWG Faculty Focus Highlight recipient, and a national runner-up for the Cognizant Innovation in Computer Science Education Award.

Her academic foundation includes a Master of Science in Information Technology and a Graduate Certificate in Health Information Technology from Kennesaw State University, a Bachelor of Applied Science in Administrative Management and an Associate of Applied Science in Office Administration from Clayton State University, an Associate of Applied Science in CIS Networking Specialist from Chattahoochee Technical College, and an ABA-Approved Paralegal Certificate.

Prior to entering higher education full-time, Marion built a robust professional background over a 22-year tenure at Alston & Bird LLP, where she directed legal document operations, technical workflows, and administrative coordination. She has also served as an adjunct computer science instructor across the Technical College System of Georgia and taught game design, programming, and web development in secondary career and technical education.

Complementing her academic instruction, Marion is a credentialed career practitioner holding national certifications as a Global Career Development Facilitator Instructor (GCDF-I), Certified Career Services Provider (CCSP), Facilitating Career Development Instructor (FCDI), Certified Student Career Coach (CSCC), Certified Professional Resume Writer (CPRW), and Certified Hidden Job Market Coach, along with formal qualifications in administering the MBTI and Strong Interest Inventory assessments.

Beyond the classroom, Marion is deeply committed to institutional service and supporting student success. At the University of West Georgia, she serves as the Faculty Sponsor for the Association for Computing Machinery-Women (ACM-W) Student Chapter and contributes to campus governance through her work on the Perry College Student Affairs Committee, faculty search committees, and the School Computing Scholarship Committee. Her broader professional outreach includes designing targeted workforce-preparation seminars, presenting on career-navigation strategies, and advocating for inclusive digital-literacy initiatives across higher education.

When not working, Marion loves crafting with beads, vinyl, and fabric, and she is an avid pickleball player who stays active on the court.
