Dawn Neely, D.M.A.

Soprano and Director Dr. Dawn Neely, a native of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, is AssistantProfessor of Voice and Director of Opera Workshop at the University of West Georgia. Dr. Neely received her Doctorate of Musical Arts from the University of Alabama. She has performed the roles of Zerlina in Don Giovanni, Gretel in Hansel and Gretel, Pousette in Manon. Gianetta in The Gondoliers, Geraldine in A Hand of Bridge, Laurentia in The Beautiful Bridegroom, and Despina in Cos fan tutte. Dr. Neely has a special interest in contemporary classical music and has performed throughout the southeast in chamber ensembles such as the University of Alabama Contemporary Ensemble and the Druid City Ensemble. As enthusiastic proponents of contemporary music, the Druid City Ensemble has commissioned several pieces to be premiered in 2015. Along with these new works, the ensemble has revived the first repertoire commissioned for this grouping by the Jubal Trio in the 1980s and 90s. In addition to contemporary pieces, concerts seek to showcase different instrumental combinations of the group and feature the trios new arrangements of orchestral and operatic works and works originally written for soprano, flute, and piano. The ensemble often collaborates with guest artists on their concerts, highlighting works, which also include violin, viola, and cello. 2014 marked the beginning of the Druid City Ensemble's first concert tour, including performances in Chicago, Atlanta, Nashville, and many more. The trio is now booking dates for their 2015 concert tour, with performances already planned in Baltimore, Nashville, Memphis, Birmingham, and Tuscaloosa. www.druidcityensemble.com. In addition to her work as a soprano, Dr. Neely is director of the University of West Georgia Opera Workshop. She has also directed with the University of Alabama Opera Theatre, The Druid City Opera Workshop, the Richard Crittenden Opera Workshop, the Harrower Opera Workshop, and the Atlanta Operas 24-Hour Opera Project. Dawn Neely was an Assistant Director with the Opera Theater of Pittsburghs SummerFest season in 2015. Dr. Neely currently serves as the Southeastern Regional Governor for the National Opera Association and is active in creating workshops for the region as well as assisting with the National Collegiate Opera and Musical Theater Scenes Competition each year.Dawn Neelys research interests include studies on body awareness and alignment methods for musicians. Dr. Neely earned her 200 Level Yoga Teaching Certificate through the Yoga Alliance in 2014. She and her Druid City Ensemble colleague will present a Yoga for Harpists workshop at the National Harp Convention in 2016. Dr. Neely has also been guest Voice Instructor Clinician for groups such as the Clear Waters Choir workshop in Carrollton, GA.
