Born and raised in a family that values hard work and a love for the land taught me to be aware of, and embrace my surroundings. My grandparents owned a very large ranch where I spent most of my time as a youth. It was on the ranch that I was allowed to work in and explore the world around me. Everything I came in contact with from nature and the everyday implements my family used to complete daily tasks intrigued me. The importance of believing in what you were doing and dedicating yourself to that belief was instilled in me from a young age.
Entering my post-secondary education as an industrial arts major enhanced my technical experience in most industrial processes. However, it was the active and productive roles that art provided which allowed me to express my creativity.
Working full-time as a carpenter after my undergraduate education allowed me to enhance my skills and also reaffirmed my desire to be an artist. I returned to school to complete my master’s of fine arts degree, which allowed me the time, resources, and environment conducive to my growth as an artist.
Currently, my teaching has spanned over twenty years to include a number of experiences around the world as both an artist and an educator, which have furthering my career and feeds my artistic soul. My support system is hinged on my wife, Jennifer, and our two daughters, Marissa and McKinley. Our daughters continue as a great source of energy and influence for me. Their experiences and trials have been exciting, heart touching and heart wrenching and it is seeing the world through their eyes that has allowed me to reminiscent and reflect on my own youth. My support system and our experiences continue to allow me in some ways to discover or rediscover the many facets of our world.
