To: All UWG Faculty & Staff

All calls to numbers in the United States, Canada and the Caribbean will have to be dialed using 8 + 1 + 10 digit phone number. The procedure for dialing international calls has not changed except dial 8 to get an outside line first.

Please remember to program speed dialers, fax machines, modems, and any other equipment to use 8 + 10-digit dialing for local calls or 8 + 1 + 10-digit for long distance.. If your phone line is restricted from making 8 + 1 calls and long distance dialing is required, please contact the ITS Helpdesk so that a work order can be initiated to make the required PBX programming restrictions removal change on your phone line(s).

If you have questions about these changes, please contact the ITS Service Desk at 678-839-6587 or via email at servicedesk@westga.edu .

UWG receives a specific allotment of free intra-national long distance minutes per month from Synchronet. Intra-state calls over that allotment are billed at around 5 cents per long distance minute. International calls are billed at the current rates.

Users on the new PBX system can make local phone calls (i.e. no long distance charges apply) to most of the numbers in the 706 area code which includes Athens, Dalton, and Rome.

Please note the reverse is not true (i.e. users in Rome, Dalton & Athens still have to pay long distance charges to call UWG phone numbers) and calls from Centrex lines will still incur long distance charges to most 706 area code numbers.

Please refer to the Synchronet LATA map for which areas are local calls for PBX users now.
