Program Description:

(UWG) Italy Program: Rome and Spoleto Session I

Session I explores Rome's history and local communities, focusing on the political and geographic dynamics of tourism. Day trips, including Rome, provide insight into how local politics and geography shape tourism. Open to all students, this session encourages critical analysis of the cultural, economic, and political impacts of travel on small communities.

Tentative Dates: May 25 - June 17, 2027

Physical & Environmental Expectations

Physical expectations are that students can climb stairs and do reasonable amounts of walking. Rome requires about a 6-mile walk. Daily walking in Spoleto is much less, but it's on the side of a hill so requires elevation gains.  Some of the walkways leading up to the historic center of Spoleto are uneven and made of cobblestones.  There are two free automated walkways that connect the bottom of the hill to the fortress at the peak of the hill.  Nonetheless, students need to know that they will need to do a lot of walking, much of which will be uphill.  All apartments require some steps (1-3 floors). Cold is not a problem. There is no A/C in the city, pretty much, so heat in June can be an issue. All apartments have fans, though, and there are ways to mitigate it.

Costs and Scholarships

Tentative Program Cost: $4,995

Estimated Guaranteed Scholarship: $1,300

Additional Costs:

  • UWG Tuition (paid separately)
  • Touchnet payments include 3% non-refundable fee
  • Twelve dinners are covered by the program, so students are responsible for the other meals. When they ask how much money they need to bring, we typically say anywhere from a few hundred (if they don't plan to do any independent travel or purchase anything) up to $1500 (if they want to travel on their own and purchase souvenirs). Food is inexpensive, and there are full kitchens in all apartments. Students can cook and save money that way. In reality, though, most want to eat out in the city most of the time. $500-$1500 is our best estimate!

Important Notes:

  • Program spots are generally first-come first-serve. The non-refundable deposit will secure your spot in the program, but if you are not accepted for any reason, then you will be reimbursed. Refunds will not be issued if you withdraw from the program at any point.
  • Lack of visa/passport may result in complete loss of program fee
